Fort Battleford National Historic Site

Description

*The site is currently open for self-guided tours of the grounds.*

Established in 1876 by the North West Mounted Police, Fort Battleford played an important role in the settlement of the west.  The Mounties chose to build at the junction of the Battle and North Saskatchewan Rivers, an area rich in First Nations and fur trade history.

Starvation and rising tensions over treaty promises set the stage for confrontation between the First Nations people and the Canadian government in 1885.  That spring, some 500 settlers crowded into Fort Battleford, fearing for their safety.  A column of Canadian soldiers arrived a month later, making Battleford their base of operations for the Battle of Cut Knife Hill and the search for Cree Chief Big Bear.

Interpretive exhibits, self-guided tours, audio tours, and an exploring program for kids, offers visitors the opportunity to discover this expansive historic site and five historic buildings.  In addition you can discover the early days of Battleford and the pivotal roles of the North West Mounted Police in the development of Canada's west.

Built around this historic site is Canada’s first Disc Golf Course to be built at a National Historic site. The course features a free play par 3, 9 hole Disc Golf Course groomed regularly, it is a great place for the whole family. The Disc Golf Course is open to the public throughout the day and in the evening. Parking outside the gates is recommend as gates are closed outside of regular business hours.
